Step By Step: What We Do to Remove Water From Your Home

Moisture meter detecting wet carpet Our top-of-the-line technology helps us detect and eradicate moisture!

Quick Water Removal Can Reduce Damages

SERVPRO of Toledo West prides itself on being “faster to any size disaster.” When a pipe bursts, a tub overflows, or a drain backs up, your home needs to have excess water removed as quickly as possible.

When handling water disasters, the first step upon our arrival is to pump out any water that is visible. This helps us gain a better visual to more easily assess the extent of the damage.

Larger amounts of porous materials require a more aggressive drying method in order to avoid mold growth. Our years of experience will benefit homeowners suffering from any kind of water damage.

Water removal begins the process, then we move toward removing the moisture that has evaporated into the air. This moisture can travel into any part of the home, and can cause problems down the line if not detected and removed. Dehumidifiers, heaters, air movers, and even open windows work best when used together. Moisture meters provide us with a beginning reading to compare to later readings throughout your home, showing progress of the drying process.

During drying, other problems can arise, such as unusual odors. Water can disturb and release odors particles from materials in your home. We can rectify this problem with odor control methods. Over-stretched carpets can also occur, which we also fix.

We take great care to ensure that any type of flooring is dry in flooding situations. This prevents warping of wooden floors and sub-flooring.

In situations that have left your home partially submerged, call us. We are available 24/7/365 to handle your water damage needs.

A flooded storage room When flooding strikes your business, let our pros handle the mess!

Flooding is an absolute catastrophe for business owners. It’s not just sopping up water, its handling wet furniture, drapery, electronics, doors, trim, and other structural elements that have water damage. Your first thought may be to get rid of everything and start new, but some of your assets are salvageable. That’s where our pros at SERVPRO of Toledo West come in.

Dry and Sort

If your flood was caused by a broken pipe, you can have a small sigh of relief knowing you don’t have to deal with black water. Despite that, you may still have the possibility of mold spread, so it is important to thoroughly dry out anything affected by the water. Once everything has been dried out, you’ll next want to inspect and sort everything to determine what can be saved and what can’t. Items that may need to be thrown out include porous materials that can’t be properly dried or cleaned and fabrics that show signs of discoloration.

Clean the Damage

Having your investments sorted following a flood will give you a better understanding of the actual damages and loss your business has faced. When it comes to cleaning items yourself, remember that dry cleaning is not just for clothes. Furniture, upholstery, and draperies can be made good as new through dry cleaning services. For everything else, consider the following tips to make for an easier process:

  • Organize items based on cleaning methods, such as hand or machine wash
  • Use a disinfectant on furniture, walls, and floors to prevent mold growth
  • Wash items in the hottest water possible to remove contaminants
  • Use a professional water damage restoration service to ensure there is no interior damage

You Can Prevent Water Damage with These Three Tips

9/3/2022 (Permalink)

Dealing with water damage can be a nightmare. So much time, money, energy, and dealing with insurance hassles can make for a real headache. It is much easier to plan and prevent water damage than deal with the aftermath. Of course, if you do experience water damage, it is best to call the pros at SERVPRO of Toledo West. Here are three steps to take to avoid water damage:

  1. Learn Where Your Shut Off Valve Is

Everyone in your household should know where the water shutoff valve is for the entire house. This way, if something goes wrong, anyone can quickly turn off the water and prevent too much damage. This is important, especially if you are not your house all the time to handle it yourself.

  1. Regularly Check for Leaks

A leaky tap can leak up to eight gallons a day. Not only will that become expensive very quickly, but it will also cause significant water damage to your home and create the perfect conditions for mold to grow. Every few weeks check around sinks and appliances for leaking pipes or standing water.

  1. Check Your Roof

The best way to see if your roof is leaking is to go into your attic when it rains and shine a flashlight around the ceiling. If you see shiny spots, you have a leak. Mark the area and contact an expert to let them repair your roof. Do not attempt to do it yourself as you may risk causing more damages or hurting yourself.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. But, if you need water damage mitigation in Toledo, then be sure to call SERVPRO!

Leaky Pipes Got You Down? Here's How to Fix Them

9/2/2022 (Permalink)

We all know that water damage to your home or business is bad. From the cost of damages, to the possible mold growth that could affect your health. Leaks and water damage are breeding grounds for mold, especially if left unmitigated and not fixed. If you find a leaky pipe in your home, it’s important to know how to fix it.

  1. The first thing you need to do when attempting to fix a leaky pipe is to locate the source of the water. If it is coming from a loose coupling nut (the thing that holds pipes together), then it’s pretty easy to grab a wrench and tighten the nut, fixing your leak.
  2. If the leak is caused by a crack in the pipe itself, you will need to use plumber’s tape, self-fusing silicone tape, or epoxy putty to fix it. These are easy to apply, you just need to be sure that the water is turned off. Then, wrap the pipe if you are using tape, or apply the putty and give it time to dry.

After fixing the pipe, make sure to clean up any standing water, and check back every day or every few days to make sure there is no more water or leaking.

If you’ve had water damage or mold growth due to a leaky pipe, call SERVPRO of Toledo West and our professionals with take care of everything.

Quick Water Removal Can Reduce Damages

SERVPRO is “Faster to any size disaster,” and this quality provides many benefits for homeowners of waterlogged residences. When a pipe has burst apart, a tub has overflowed, or a drain backed up, your home needs to have that excess water removed as quickly as possible.

Homes in Toledo that have excess water from disasters such as pipe failures and forgotten tubs dry out best when water removal services from SERVPRO are the first part of the entire process. Pumping out any water that is visible upon our arrival helps us gain a better visual so we can more easily assess the extent of the overall damage.

Larger amounts of porous materials require more aggressive drying methods than materials that are less porous. Our experience benefits homeowners in many kinds of disasters that can damage a home by giving us insight into how best proceed in almost any type of situation imaginable, and overflowing toilets and tubs, exploding water heaters, burst pipes, and flooding from natural sources are only a few of those catastrophes.

Removing water starts the process, but then we need to move toward removing the moisture that has escaped into the air through evaporation. This moisture can find its way into every part of your home and create problems later unless it is captured and removed. Dehumidifiers, heaters, air movers, and even open windows can work wonders when used together. Moisture meters provide us with a beginning reading of areas in your home that are compared to later readings, showing us our progress in drying out your home.

When dry, remaining problems can still exist, such as unusual odors. This is because odors are caused by particles, that although tiny, produce smells when they have been disturbed. We can rectify this problem with odor control methods. Other problems that can remain behind include over-stretched carpeting, and we can fix that problem, also.

Because floors are always saturated in a situation where standing water exists, we take great care in ensuring that these surfaces are completely dry. This prevents warping of wooden floors and sub-flooring. Otherwise, walking in your home may soon become hazardous for your family and guests.

In situations that have left your home partially submerged, call us.

We can begin water removal efforts so that your home is once again as it should be, perfectly dry. Accidents can occur at all hours of the day and night, and because of this, we are always available to take your call.

Can Carpets Be Cleaned After A Water Damage?

12/8/2017 (Permalink)

People around the Toledo, Ohio area have often asked "can my carpeting be saved after a water damage?" The answer has a couple of variables.

  1. Did the water come from a clean source such as a supply line?
  2. How long has the carpet been wet?
  3. Age of the carpet?
  4. Is the carpet Delaminated?

If The water source was clean water and you can it has not been sitting for an extended period of time chances are really god it can be saved. With that being said we then must make sure the carpets integrity will hold up when it is lifted to dry and then relayed. First we carefully remove the carpet from the tact strips, unless of course it is glue down; If that is the case we can simply extract the carpet and dry it in place. Once the carpet is lifted from the tact strip the padding is typically removed due to the fact that it is very hard to dry properly and completely. We want to make sue the pad will not hold and grow bacteria. After the pad had been removed we then put air movers under the carpet and "float" the carpet to dry. once the carpet and sub floor have dried completely new pad can be installed and the carpet can then be relayed. At that point SERVPRO of Sylvania/West Toledo can then Clean the Carpet.

Sewage Backups. Are you Covered?

12/1/2017 (Permalink)

This past year my Daughter had the unpleasant experience of having a Sewage backup in her home in Maumee Ohio. Thankfully I work for SERVPRO of Sylvania/West Toledo so I knew the steps we needed to take. What I didn't realize was she had never added optional sewage backup coverage to her policy. A lot of people do not realize that even though many water damages to your home are covered under your homeowners policy, sewage backup is most likely not. A sewage backup requires immediate proper clean-up that can be very expensive as well it can result in damage to carpets, walls, furniture and other personal property that will be costly to replace. The cost of adding the coverage to your policy is minimal in comparison. Needless to say she is now covered!

Water Categories As Defined By The IICRC

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

Having a water loss in your home can be traumatizing.  In addition to the tips on preventing secondary damage it is helpful to know and understand the 3 categories of water associated with a water loss.  According to the IICRC guidelines, there are 3 categories of water in a water loss: Category 1, Category 2, and Category 3.  Let’s take a look at each category:

Category 1: This is clean, sanitary water.  Sources can be faucets, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, etc.  The category can quickly change to a Category 2 however.

Category 2: This category of water is typically referred to as “grey water”, and is described as having levels of contaminates that may cause you some sickness or discomfort if ingested.  Category 2 water can come from dishwasher or washing machine overflows and sink drains.

Category 3: This is the worst category of water, it is grossly unsanitary. It used to be called, and is still sometimes referred to as, black water.  Sources of Category 3 water can be sewer backups, flooding from streams and rivers, toilet overflows with feces, and liquid that has sat and became stagnant.

Why Use An IICRC certified Company?

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

The IICRC is a nonprofit certification and Standards Developing Organization (SDO) for the inspection, cleaning and restoration industries. It sets the standards for the industry.

Each IICRC standard takes years to develop and the coordination of several experts in the field, including allied tradespersons; manufacturers; international, national and regional trade associations; individual or franchise professionals; cleaning, inspection and restoration industry organizations; insurance industry; training schools; contractors; and public health professionals.

These standards are reviewed and updated at least every five years. Many of these fields, such as the water damage restoration field, change rapidly and those who are certified keep up with the advancement of the science and generally accepted practices of the industry.

When you choose a company that is IICRC certified, such as SERVPRO of Sylvania/West Toledo, you can be sure that you receive service from knowledgeable, certified technicians.

Water Damage in Toledo: What To Do First

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

When you have a water damage in your home or business, you need to know what to do NOW. The difference in waiting just a few hours can mean hundreds, even thousands of dollars worth on additional damage.

The Five Things You Should Do NOW

1. Find And Stop The Source. If fresh water plumbing is involved turn off the valve to the fixture that is leaking. If there is no cut-off valve or you cannot locate the break, then turn off the main water supply valve to the house.

2. If the water source was clean, remove as much standing water as possible. Use a wet/dry vac if you have one never a household vacuum. Use clean, white towels, linens, blankets, to contain the water and prevent it from entering unaffected areas. Do not attempt this if the water is contaminated such as sewer water, leave this to SERVPRO of Sylvania/West Toledo.

3. Remove all items that may be damaged by water and place them in an unaffected area. Move light furniture to an unaffected area. Place aluminum foil, blocks or plastic under the legs of furniture. Wipe any water from the legs.

4. In warmer months, turn on air conditioner no lower than 72 degrees. Open drawers on any wet furniture and remove contents and spread out to dry.

5. Call SERVPRO of Sylvania/West Toledo to do a dry out your structure. Don’t wait. SERVPRO professionals understand the critical nature of a water damage and respond quickly, even after business hours and on weekends.

What to expect when you're not expecting.

11/28/2017 (Permalink)

When a water loss occurs, the single most critical factor in defining the amount of potential damage is the amount of time the structure remains abnormally wet. It is for this reason that the most critical course of action in the restorative drying process is how quickly the damage is responded to. This is the time to call in your local SERVPRO professionals.

The goal of the restoration process is to bring an abnormally wet and potentially damaged structure back to its preloss condition in the most economical and efficient manner as possible.

In the beginning of the process your SERVPRO professional must identify all affected materials. Next comes documenting what type of materials are affected. Affected Materials are then evaluated against three criteria to determine if they should be restored or replaced.

Things are taken into account are:

 Degree of contamination

 Damage to item

Cost of restoration verses cost of replacement.

Once material has been identified and the SERVPRO professional has decided what needs to be dried and what needs to be replaced’ they will then measure the Temperature/ Humidity for drying analysis.

Our next step is to remove as much water as possible from the affected area.

Furniture will be moved and blocked as necessary. It may be necessary to remove carpet pad to protect the subfloor and speed the drying process.

The carpet will be checked for restorability, delamination and mold growth.

Sometimes it is also necessary to include the application of a EPA- registered disinfectant.

Drying equipment such as commercial dehumidifiers and commercial air movers may be used to dry the property. The purpose of the equipment is to remove excess moisture and bring the relative humidity levels back down to normal.

The equipment is then left running for approximately three days until all affected material left in the home are at or below a goal level set by your IICRC certified SERVPRO professional.

Throughout the drying process you can expect the Technician to visit the home daily to monitor the progress of the material and to adjust equipment as necessary.

Once the SERVPRO professional has deemed the structure dry, the process of putting the home back together is now ready to begin. Soon your home will be back to normal.
